Girls basketball: Sweet Home falls to Newport, Philomath

The Sweet Home girls basketball team is still searching for its first Class 4A Oregon West Conference win after a 57-26 loss at Newport on Feb. 9.

The Cubs (11-10) were up 32-14 at halftime on the way to the victory.

“We came in with the goal of shutting down their No. 10 (forward Sheala Simmons), which we did,” Sweet Home Head Coach Michelle Knight said. “We held her to seven points, but they had some other girls that could shoot outside shots that we didn’t account for.

“Our first quarter was really rough. There were lots of turnovers, and we just never really could get back from that.”

Sweet Home (4-17) shot just 24.1% from the field while Newport shot 36.4%. The Huskies turned the ball over 27 times while forcing 15.

Senior Brooke Burke led Sweet Home in scoring with nine points on 3-12 shooting. Freshman Aubrey Newberry had six points on 1-4 shooting, and senior Meeja Bitter added five on 1-4 shooting.

The Huskies also fell 64-18 to Philomath on Monday, Feb. 13, dropping to 0-9 in league play. (See enclosed photos; game details were not available at press time.)

The Huskies host North Marion (5-17) for a 7 p.m. game Thursday, Feb. 16 (senior night). They then travel to Stayton (12-9) to take on the Eagles at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20 to end the season.
