The Husky girls basketball team lost to Cascade 59-32 and Sisters 50-42 last week.
At Sisters on Tuesday, “we played a really good game,” Coach Jason Gorham said. Sisters got a little bit ahead by halftime, leading 24-18. The two teams played evenly, 14-14, in the third quarter; and the Huskies got within three with just four minutes left in the game.
“We were right there and had our chance,” Coach Gorham said. “We gave them a basket, turned the ball over, and they hit a three for the margin.”
The Huskies’ shooting was a little better that game, Coach Gorham said. Their defense stepped up and forced more turnovers than usual allowing the Huskies easier, higher-percentage shots on offense.
Kendra Greene and Teresa Lewis led scoring with eight points each. Lei Himan-Teves and Hannah Swanson added seven each; Rachel Gaskey, six; Ashley Wall and Chelsea Hackworth, five; Jenna Anderson, three; and Cindy Jones, one.
The Huskies hosted Cascade, which has lost only two games all year, on Friday night.
“Cacsade’s a good basketball team,” Coach Risen said. The team has been top-10 all year long.
Cascade set up and maintained a lead of 10 to 12 points early in the game.
Cascade led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter and 31-16 by halftime. The Huskies closed the lead to 37-24 by the end of the third.
The Huskies cut the lead to eight points with six minutes left but never got closer.
The Huskies just didn’t have enough players to keep it up with Cascade, Coach Gorham said. Cascade ran traps and presses on every possession.
“I thought we handled their presses and traps well, but it was disruptive to our offense,” Coach Gorham said. The Huskies had only 19 turnovers on the game and about 20 against Sisters. That level is much lower than earlier in the season and previous years.
“Right now, we’re just building on small improvements each week and getting a little bit better each time out,” Coach Gorham said. “It would be great to have some more wins right now.”
Coach Gorham is happy with the improvements the team has made.
“We’ve had chances to win,” Coach Gorham said. “But they just didn’t work out for us. I think we’re definitely building towards the future in positive ways.
Against Cascade, Himan-Teves led scoring with eight points. Greene added seven; Gaskey, six; Lewis four; Hackworth, three; and Ashley Wall and Jones, two. Ann Hortsch led Cascade scoring with 27 points.
The junior varsity lost to Cascade and Sisters. The freshmen lost to Sisters.
