Girls Basketball Update

Getting started in the first quarter was a test for the Huskies girls basketball team last week.

Against North Marion, Sweet Home fell victim to a pressure defense and trailed 22-7 after the first period. History repeated itself when the Huskies opened the second half of league play at home against Molalla and faced a 20-5 deficit after the first quarter.

The Huskies never could get untracked against North Marion, who went on extended runs throughout the game before defeating Sweet Home 69-31. At one point in the second quarter, the Huskies had an eight point run to cut the lead to ten, but North, led by Kelsey Kahle, came back to outscore Sweet Home 14-4 for the rest of the quarter. Kendra Greene scored 16 points, but could not match Kahle’s 31.

After trailing by 15 against Molalla, the Huskies kept that close until the middle of the third quarter, thanks in large part to Greene’s shooting, especially in the second half when she scored 14 of her game high 22. In the middle of the third quarter, however, the Indians stepped it up a notch and scored ten consecutive points in just a little over two minutes, which eventually led to a comfortable victory of 57-35.

The Huskies will go for their first league win, though they will be hard pressed against the dominating Cascade Cougars and the ever-improving Sisters Outlaws next week.
