Sweet Home girls basketball (3-2) won two games and lost one – to a top-ranked team – in last week’s action.

Playing at Molalla on Dec. 7, the girls won 45-36.

Head Coach Michelle Knight noted that her team won every quarter of that game. “It was a fun game and we played really well as a team,” the coach said. “We had four great quarters.”

Junior Brooke Burke led the team in scoring with 23 points on 8-21 shooting from the field. Senior Adaira Sleutel tacked on 13 for the Huskies on 5-11 shooting, while also pulling in 15 rebounds.

The Huskies shot 43.6% from the field while the Indians shot at a 23.2% rate.

Over the weekend, the girls took part in the Junction City Les Schwab Holiday Classic.

They lost to host Junction City 52-23 on Friday night.

“It was a rough night,” Knight said. “We played a good first half but struggled in the second. We couldn’t find our rhythm. But it was good for us to see where we are at against a really strong team. We count it as a learning opportunity.”

Burke connected on two three-pointers on her way to a team leading 13 points. Sleutel added six points for the Huskies in the losing effort.

The next day versus Seaside (2-3) the Huskies found a way to win in a low-scoring affair, 23-21. “It wasn’t our best game but I’m proud we came out and won the game in the end,” Knight said. “We just struggled to score, and struggled to make shots we normally can hit.”

The game was tied at 21-21 when Sleutel was fouled on the floor with just two seconds left. The senior made both free throws to seal the victory.

Burke was again the team’s leading scorer with 10 points. Sleutel had seven and senior Chloe Fairchild scored five.

The Huskies go on the road this week, first playing at Marist Catholic (2-1) on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 7:15 p.m., then playing at Harrisburg (5-0) on Friday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m.
