Sweet Home 27, Marshall 15
The Huskies defeated Marshall High School 27-15 in girls basketball to place third in the Gladstone tournament held over the weekend.
“Against Marshall, if you look at the score by quarter, we were able to get out on them early,” said Coach John Barnes. The Huskies played good half-court defense and were able to get out and run against Marshall.
The Huskies built a 10-2 lead by the end of one quarter and 20-8 lead by halftime. By the end of the third, the Huskies were ahead 24-9.

Gladstone 57, Sweet Home 29
Gladstone defeated the Huskies 57-29 to begin the tournament.
The Huskies did a great job getting to the foul line for the second game in a row but only shot 8-28, Barnes said. The girls did well elsewhere on the court too but weren’t able to translate it to points on the board.
“I think we did a nice job blocking out,” Barnes said. “We got them into foul trouble.”
Against Gladstone, the Huskies trailed 16-3 in the first quarter and 26-12 at halftime. Gladstone stretched its lead to 39-16 after three.
In addition to their scoring, Cole had four assists, Graville had four rebounds and three steals and Whitfield led the Huskies with seven boards.

North Marion 58, Sweet Home 33
Sweet Home started strong against North Marion, leading 17-16 after one quarter, but the narrow lead evaporated into a 58-33 loss on the road Dec. 14.
“North Marion, first quarter, obviously we came out, they applied pressure, which we knew they would,” Barnes said, and the southern Huskies turned it around on the northern Huskies. “We were able to get out and run.”
Things turned around in the second quarter, and North Marion led 29-22 at halftime and 43-27 at the end of the third quarter.
Sweet Home had its chances, Barnes said. The Huskies reached the foul line 27 times but sank only seven free throws.
Graville was outstanding under the bucket, pulling down 23 rebounds, 10 of them offensive boards, and she led scoring with nine points, Barnes said. “She has a nose for the ball, and she’s working extremely hard.”
Huskies ball handling improved as well, he said. They turned the ball over only 13 times, their best outing this year.
“Through the loss, you can see there are things that we can fix,” Barnes said, and that’s what non-league play is for.
