Girls even season hoops record with win over Taft

The Huskies defeated Taft 40-33 Friday at home in girls basketball, extending their official record to 3-3.

“We played really well,” said Coach Steve Brown. “The people in the stands are saying they can see we’re improving. It was a good win to finish out the year on a good note. I was very proud of them. I felt we were in control of the game even if the score was close. They all played well together.”

The girls missed quite a few shots, Brown said. Had their shooting percentage been higher, it would have been a double-digit win.

The Huskies had 18 turnovers on the game, Brown said, and most of those were on fast breaks pushing the ball too far ahead. The Huskies came up with about 27 defensive rebounds, and the girls shot fairly well from the foul line.

On the floor, Haley Kent got things going for the Huskies in the first quarter with a field goal two pairs of free throws, Brown said. Harlee Brendle and Jordan Miller put some points on the board, and Amanda Hubbard came off the bench in the second quarter to hit a three.

India Porter started the game along with Brendle and Miller as Brown attempted put some height on the floor to match up to a taller Taft player. Kent and Katie Virtue also started.

The junior varsity lost by two in overtime.

Coming up, the Huskies face Crosshill Christian and Santiam Christian at a tournament scheduled for Thursday and Friday and travel to Philomath on Tuesday. They’ll host Blanchet Catholic on Jan. 10.
