The Husky girl’s basketball team lost to Newport 55-39 on Jan. 30 on the road and to Central 52-42 at home Friday night.
Central jumped out to an early lead on the Huskies, building a 13-4 lead on the first quarter. Central drove that lead to 12 points in the second quarter before the Huskies went onto a 13-2 run and pulled within three by halftime, 25-22.
In the second half, the Huskies stayed within four or five points of Central but couldn’t close the lead up until nearly the end of the game.
With 2 ½ minutes left, the Huskies got within one, 43-42. Central hit a couple of shots to secure its win.
Sophomore post Jenny Hamn stood out all week, Gorham said.
“She played really well inside. We’ve been trying to get the ball inside to all of our posts. She’s really taken advantage of it.”
She’s rebounding well, grabbing the boards and putting them back in for two as well as taking control inside, he said. She has been improving all season long, “and it showed this week have two big games for us.”
Hamn led Husky scoring against Central with 15 points. Sara Brocard added 11; Ashley Danielson, 10; Makenzie Marchbanks, seven; Tabby Trahan, two; and Erika Snow, two.
Sara Cole led Central in scoring with 15 points.
Hamn also led the Huskies against Newport, scoring 15 points, but the her efforts weren’t enough to secure a win where the Husky offense struggled.
The Huskies trailed 16-7 after the first quarter and 31-17 at halftime. They trailed 46-26 at the end of the third.
“We struggled offensively all night,” Gorham said. “We weren’t able to make a lot of shots. We just never got on track offensively.”
At the same time, Central’s Riley Petersen couldn’t miss, Gorham said. She put up 27 of Central’s points, shooting 12-16 from the field.
“They got into a zone once they got the lead,” Gorham said, and the Huskies had a hard time shooting from the outside.
Trahan and Danielson added six points each for the Huskies; Michelle Aerni and Marchbanks, five; and Brocard, two.
The Huskies were scheduled to play at Philomath Tuesday and home with Taft on Thursday. On Feb. 16, they are home against Newport and finish at Central on Feb. 20.
