Sweet Home’s girls won their toughest meet of the year, featuring five of the top teams in the state, Saturday, Jan. 4, in the inaugural Peargin Plunge at Sweet Home’s pool.

It was probably one of the strongest fields the Huskies have hosted in recent years, other than when they hosted the district meet during COVID, Coach A Jay Bronson said.

The visitors included Newport, the defending boys and girls champion from last year, La Grande, which placed second in the girls state championships, along with perennial contender Marshfield, and Molalla, Cascade Christian, Cove and Salem Academy, which are regulars on the deck at the state championships.

The meet honors Doug Peargin, still an assistant coach with the Sweet Home swimming program, who has been part of Husky aquatics for more than 50 years, during which his teams won multiple boys and girls state titles.

“I think it was the biggest one we’ve had, maybe bigger than when we hosted districts,” Coach A Jay Bronson said of the quality of the competition in the meet. “All the teams seemed to love being here and we had some great swims.”

Khloe Sautel was a double winner for the Husky girls, finishing first in the 200 Individual Medley and the 500 Freestyle, and swimming a leg in the Huskies’ 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay wins. Both were best times for her, Bronson said.

Sweet Home also won the girls 400 Freestyle Relay, Lexi Rundell, Daisy Lalonde, Peyton Markell and Kirsten Sautel combining for a half-second win over Marshfield in 4:09.53.

Kirsten Sautel was the Huskies’ other winner, taking first in the 100 Breaststroke.

Shayne Schuster gets encouragement from teammates, from left, Ella Haggas, Lexi Rundell and Kirsten Sautel as he competes in the 200 Individual Medley.

The boys team of Andrew Tolman, Shayne Schuster, RJ Abbott and Austyn Hogan won the 200 Medley Relay and Abbott and Schuster contributed individual wins in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke, respectively.

Sweet Home’s Timber Nobles was named the Huskies’ Swimmer of the Meet, dropping times in every event she swam, Bronson said.

Up next for the Huskies is the Albany Sprint Meet on Saturday, Jan. 11, which will include all the teams in the district.

Sweet Home’s next home meet will be Friday, Jan. 17, hosting Philomath, Sisters, Kennedy and Hidden Valley at 4 p.m.
