Girls get win against Creswell

The Husky girls’ soccer team won their first game of the year 1-0 against Creswell at home on Sept. 13.

“It was pretty evenly matched the entire game,” Coach Eric Markell said. “We spent a lot of time on their end, and they spent a lot of time on ours.”

Creswell probably took more shots on goal than the Huskies, Markell said. But the Huskies were the ones to score a goal.

Brianna Wirth took a shot 15 minutes into the game, but it bounced off the goalie’s arm, Markell said. Jessica Snow had followed her in and knocked the ball into the goal.

“We hadn’t been following our shots that day,” Markell said, but Snow followed that one in where it paid off.

After that, “we just kind of kicked back and played defense the rest of the game and kept them from scoring,” Markell said. Everyone did their parts, played with more effort and corrected some problems from the first week of the season.

“Everything we did on Wednesday, we did the opposite today,” Markell said of Monday’s contest against Thurston.

The Huskies lost 13-1 after scoring on themselves in the first two minutes. Alex Hawk would redeem herself for that move later in the first half by scoring the Huskies’ only goal.

“It was a beautiful goal,” Markell said. “It was a corner kick from Brianna Worth,” and Hawk nailed it.

A couple of players put out an effort, Markell said, but not enough.

“I think if we would have played like we played last week, it would have been a better game,” he said. “It’s unfortunate to take a step backward” because the team has “been getting better each game.”
