Girls hold JC score down, compete with La Pine after bad start

Junction City 45,

Sweet Home 17

Junction City defeated Sweet Home 63-43 in girls basketball Friday night at Junction City.

“We were really proud of them,” Coach Robby Robinson said of his team. “They played hard. They defended hard.”

Junction City has been racking up more than 60 points per game, Robinson said.

It’s also the second-lowest scoring opponent for the Huskies this season. Hidden Valley scored 43.

But the Huskies couldn’t turn it around on the other end.

“We just couldn’t buy a basket,” Robinson said. Shooting was probably 15 percent.

The girls limited Junction City’s possessions, played good defense and rebounded better, he said, but they turned the ball over 29 times.

“I think our energy was good,” Robinson said.

La Pine 63, Sweet Home 43

The Huskies were unable to dig out from an early 18-point deficit and lost 63-43 at home to La Pine on Jan. 24.

The Huskies got off to a bad start, trailing 19-1 at the end of the first quarter, Robinson said. After that, the Huskies and La Pine played a tight game. The Huskies trailed 44-42 on the rest of the game.

“We’re improving in a lot of ways,” Robinson said. Harlee Brendle and Jordan Miller are both stepping up, so rebounding is improving.

The Huskies need to focus on avoiding turnovers, he said, but “I still think 90 percent of it is battling the mental game.”
