The Sweet Home Huskies softball team won a pitcher’s duel 2-0 on Thursday at home.
“As usual, Makenzie (Marchbanks) gives a great effort, and we played good defense behind her,” Coach Steve Hummer said. Marchbanks gave up two hits, struck out 14 batters and allowed no walks.
At bats, Marchbanks and Chelsea Gregory went 1-2 with one RBI each.

Game one of doubleheader
The Huskies followed up with a 1-0 and 3-2 loss in a doubleheader Saturday at Central.
“Nicki Aerni played great defense all day, as did the team,” Hummer said. “Makenzie gave a great effort, but we made a mistake defensively late and good teams take advantage of that.
“Our bats have got to get going as we head into the last part of the league season.”
The Huskies had three hits.

“Different game, same story,” Hummer said. “We didn’t execute in key situations, and it cost us the ball game. Our defense was stellar until late.
“Offensively, we are in a bit of a slump right now, but we are going to take care of that.”

Sweet Home 5, Stayton 4
The Huskies took nine innings to nip the Stayton Eagles 5-4 on the road on April 25.
“Great game,” Hummer said. “We battled and battled to stay in this game. Stayton really hit the ball well, but we just refused to give in.
“We have been talking about winning a close one. Now we know what it tastes like. This game puts is in a tie fo third and keeps us in the playoff hunt.
“(Sara) Brocard had a huge game getting the game-winning hit in the ninth and stealing two bases,” Hummer said. “I was very proud of them tonight. It was a really big win for us, just the kind of win we needed.”
