Girls lose to Woodburn, No. 1 Philomath in hoops

The Huskies lost 67-53 at Woodburn on Feb. 4 and then to top-ranked Philomath 57-25 at home Friday evening.

Against Woodburn, the Huskies got behind 17-10 in the first quarter, and Woodburn poured it on.

“We were down 41-25 at halftime,” said Coach Michelle Knight. “It looked pretty bleak.”

The game got bleaker as Woodburn continued pulling away, leading 60-37 at the end of the third quarter. Sweet Home bounced back in the fourth, outscoring Woodburn 16-5.

“Woodburn runs a kind of 1-2-2 trap,” Knight said. “A lot of teams are doing that this year. We’ve been struggling with that. We figured it out in the fourth quarter.”

Becky Belcher led Sweet Home scoring with 21 points, Knight said. “She was just on fire.”

Taiya Kent led Woodburn with 23 points.

Sweet Home, 1-7, was scheduled to face Stayton, 5-3, at home Tuesday. The Huskies will host Cascade, 6-1, at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18.

“I think we can beat anybody,” Knight said about facing Cascade. “These girls can do anything they set their minds to.”
