Girls lose two in opening week

The girls basketball team lost its first two games last week, 55-30 to Cottage Grove on Thursday and 42-38 to Creswell on Tuesday, both on the road.

Against Cottage Grove, “we started out fairly strong, but the start of the second quarter, we had some defensive mistakes inside, and they won it inside,” Coach Jason Gorham said. Once the Huskies got behind, they stayed with Cottage Grove, trailing 10 to 15 points, until the fourth quarter when Creswell pulled away further.

Cottage Grove led 16-10 after the first quarter and 26-14 at half-time. After three quarters, Cottage Grove led 38-25.

Teresa Lewis led the team offensively with 13 points, Coach Gorham said. Rachel Gaskey played well defensively, rebounding well.

The Huskies shot 9-29 from the field and 12-24 from the foul line. They had 20 turnovers.

“We’ve been talking about it a lot over the last week, limiting our turnovers,” Coach Gorham said.

Also scoring for the Huskies were Chelsea Hackworth and Lei Himan-Teves with four each; Amber Davis, three; and Kendra Greene, Rachel Gaskey and Jenna Anderson, one each. A. Adams led Cottage Grove with 18.

Against Creswell, the Huskies led 5-4 by the end of the first quarter. By half-time, the Huskies were leading 16-11, and at the end of the third quarter, the Huskies led 29-21. Creswell caught up with the Huskies with about three minutes left. They put a run together and went up. The Huskies had a chance to get ahead with nine seconds left but missed, allowing Creswell to put the game away.

Lewis led the Huskies with 13 points. Greene added seven; Himan-Teves, six; and Cindy Jones, Anderson and Gaskey, four each. C. Winslow led Creswell with 14.

“Overall, I think we’re improving,” Coach Gorham said. “I think the biggest hurdle right now will be reaching the level of play we have to reach to be competitive. Other teams are at the level we have to reach, how competitive we have to be to get there every night.”
