Girls narrowly lose physical soccer game at Newport

The Huskies lost 3-2 at Newport in girls soccer on Sept. 16.

“They scored the first goal within the first five minutes,” said Coach Ramiro Santana. “And they scored another one in minute 10.”

Newport put its third goal in the net about five minutes before the half, and then Newport didn’t score again.

The Huskies regrouped at halftime, Santana said. “We talked to the girls, we have to have more patience with the ball.”

The Huskies were losing control defensively to the fast Newport attack, Santana said. His team needed to slow down a bit and watch what it was doing.

Second half, the Huskies were a totally different team, Santana said. In six minutes, Milah Weld took a shot and connected.

“We continued to pressure from the middle of the field,” Santana said. “We started totally controlling the other team. I don’t know if they were getting tired. I just told the girls, keep going.”

In the minute 26 in the second half, Allison Wickline connected a long kick to her twin sister, Ashley, who took a shot and scored, leaving the Huskies trailing just 3-2.

Between the two goals, Aspen Szubart and a Newport opponent pulled red cards after an altercation. Santana said Szubart was defending herself. Szubart missed the game against Sisters on Thursday.

The Huskies finished the game with 10 players, Santana said. “We just kept playing. We had opportunity after opportunity.”

They’d get an open look, but they couldn’t get the ball into the goal.

The Huskies, mostly freshmen and sophomores, played Sisters, all juniors and seniors, on the road Thursday and lost 7-0.

Sisters is tall, Santana said, and they are amazing.

“One of them can kick from the middle of the field and score a goal,” he said, and his girls had to stay on top of her all game.

The Outlaws led 2-0 at halftime.

“We’re playing better every time,” Santana said. “We’re starting to play more like a team.”

Right now, the Huskies need to take their time, pass more and get control, he said. Everyone is playing hard.

“They don’t give up,” Santana said, pointing to Newport as evidence. “That’s the part I like most about this team.”
