Girls notch first hoops win of season at Taft

Sweet Home 43, Taft 23

A high-pressure Husky defense turned into a winning offense Friday night on the road, with the girls defeated Taft 43-23 in basketball.

“We got out and put pressure on them,” said Coach John Barnes. “We were able to get turnovers and easy baskets.”

They were able to run a bit, he said. “It was great to get this win because everyone played, everyone contributed.”

The Huskies led 8-0 after one quarter and 28-8 at halftime. Taft trailed 32-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Abby Smith led Taft scoring with 15 points, creating a strong inside presence, Barnes said; but the Huskies were aggressive and able to draw fouls from her, putting her into foul trouble.

Annie Whitfield led the Huskies with 18 points, nine steals and seven rebounds. Rylee Cole added four points, four steals and four assists. Megan Graville scored three with six rebounds.
