After a season of mostly non-track-like weather, the sun came out Wednesday, May 4, and Sweet Home’s girls blossomed a bit, beating both Lebanon and South Albany in a three-way dual track meet hosted by South Albany.
“We had a good day,” said Coach Billy Snow.
The boys didn’t win in the scoring, but they turned in some big performances as well.
Harvir Grewal shook off a delay in the pole vault caused when another vaulter landed in the pit and required an ambulance visit, followed by a broken pole on the next jump.
Grewal then posted a 1-foot PR, jumping 11-6 to win the event.
“Harvir did great, especially after what happened,” Snow said.
Freshman Kyle Rose posted a 7 1/2-foot PR in the javelin, throwing 109-2 to break into the Huskies’ all-time freshman top-10 list.
One the girls side, Devyn Makin jumped into the 100 at the last minute, using blocks set up for someone else, and ran a PR of 13.19.
“We’ve loaded up in the 100 and it turns out that that will be a big event in the district meet,” Snow said, noting that Alex Santana also PR’d in the boys event, taking second in 11.14 after leading the boys short relay to second place, by a whisker, to Lebanon in their second-fastest time of the year (43.56), despite two bad handoffs and a cramp.
“Alex had a great day,” Snow said. “He looked good in the 100 and the short relay (in which the Huskies took second behind Lebanon). He long jumped for the second time this year and his mark was off but all his takeoff points were consistently close.”
Back on the track after an injury, Maria Kropf led the girls short relay to the win and then cruised to victory in the 200.
Carissa Swanson, who had missed three meets this season due to various circumstances, found her stride and won the 1500 and 800 for the girls, as well as leading off for the 4×400 relay team, which was also a winner.
Kaitlin Keenon “looked like the Kaitlin of old,” Snow said, finishing second in the girls pole vault, third in the triple jump and fourth in the 100 hurdles – in a PR of 17.95.
Sophomore Crystal Crites had a big day as well, posting a PR of 4-6 in the high jump, then moving over to the triple jump to add a 2-foot PR there as well, in 28-6.
Snow said it took individual efforts like that to get wins against 5A schools with larger student populations.
“One person couldn’t win that whole thing,” he said. “But our girls in the dual won against both those teams. Any time you go up against a school that’s a whole lot bigger than you are and you can compete with them, something is going your way.”
The Sky-Em district meet will be at Sisters this Thursday and Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. both days. Snow said he expects the Huskies to be up against a powerful Cottage Grove boys team and will be neck and neck with Sisters on the girls side.
“I told the kids everybody has to do their job but we need kids who are not expected to score to step up and score,” he said. “We’re already counting on our top kids to be on top of their game. But we need kids who are going in in seventh place to jump up to fourth or fifth. They don’t need to be spectacular. They just need to go out and compete.”
