Sweet Home 2, Sutherlin 1
The Huskies edged out Sutherlin in girls varsity soccer at home on Sept. 23.
“It was a pretty good game,” said Coach Ramiro Santana. “The girls played competitively that day, and it was a team we matched pretty good.”
The Huskies had more opportunities than Sutherlin, Santana said, but they missed a few, including a penalty kick.
Sutherlin scored about 10 minutes into the game. Cora McKee knocked the ball into the net in the minute 23 to tie the game 1-1.
In the second half, Jessie Thomas scored the game-winning goal in the minute 29.
Trailing on the scoreboard, “we are responding good,” Santana said. “They score and they don’t give. They keep fighting. We pressured them most of the time.”
Hailey Nicholson was key to preserving the victory with 11 saves on the game.
The Huskies shot the ball 21 times. Sutherlin shot it eight.
The Huskies fell to Cottage Grove 5-0 Thursday at home. Cottage Grove led 2-0 at halftime.
“We played good,” Santana said. “Actually, I was very proud of them. We played amazing.”
It was probably one of the best games of the season, Santana said. “We’re playing very strong teams.”
The Huskies are smaller, with less experience, he said, but they’re learning and getting better every game. The players are learning to work together and getting on the same page.
“It’s going to be something to look forward to,” he said.
