Girls soccer team can’t get offense going in losses

The Sweet Home girls soccer team lost 4-0 at home against Junction City Monday evening.

The Huskies started out competitive, but momentum swung Junction City’s way about 20 minutes into the game when the Tigers scored their first goal.

“When you have a young team, you never know what you’re going to get,” said Coach Ramiro Santana of his players.

“They played well, but our shooting has been pretty poor this year. You can be competitive on the field, but when it comes to you and you don’t shoot, you don’t score and end up losing.”

After Junction City’s score, the team cooled down and didn’t seem to play as hard, Santana said. “We looked all right. It’s just a young team.”

Add to that Junction City’s physical game, Santana said.

The previous week had been rough as the Huskies lost 2-0 to Elmira on the road Oct. 18 and 5-0 to Cottage Grove at home on Oct. 16.

Had the Huskies defeated Elmira, they probably would have had an automatic spot in the playoffs, Santana said. Now, the Huskies have to get a win or at least tie at Sisters on Wednesday to have a shot at playoffs.

“We will see how that is going to work out,” Santana said. “It’s a young team, still competitive. We fight them and give them heck, but it’s just a young team, a building year for us.”

And that’s a little hard on the seniors, he said.

Senior night was Monday, and he praised the veterans’ performance this season. Sabrina Davis and Alana Long have both played four years, while Demi Stratman played three, with a little varsity time last year. Sandeep Grewal played her first year of soccer this season.
