Girls split final 2 soccer games

Sweet Home’s girls soccer team beat Junction City 2-0 on April 6 and lost 4-0 to Estacada on April 8 in their final matches of the season last week.

“Against Junction City, we passed the ball much better and had a lot of opportunities,” said Head Coach Ramiro Santana.

Sweet Home capitalized on those opportunities when Madison Harris scored 10 minutes into the first half and Jenna Wolthuis scored in the 21st minute of the second half.

Against Estacada, though, the Huskies were unable to put any balls in the back of the net in the 4-0 loss.

Santana said the Estacada game was “very physical. It was a lot of pushing.”

“We had a lot of shots, but their goalie stopped a lot of potential goals,” he said.

Estacada scored two goals in the first half and two in the second.

Looking back on the season, Santana said, “This was a weird year. I think we could have done much better. But with the restrictions, it was hard for everybody to adapt.”

But he said, “Overall, I think our girls played very good and very hard. It was probably one of the best teams I have coached when it comes to knowledge of the game, the way they moved the ball and the way they communicated.”

“This group is an amazing group,” he said.

Sweet Home will graduate 10 seniors.

As the team will lose so much experience, Santana said “it will be pretty tough for us next year.”

“It’s going to be a whole new team for us,” he said.
