Girls swim to first place at Junction City Invitational; boys third

A little spent from a hard series of workouts over the holiday break, Sweet Home’s swimmers still managed to win the girls title at the Junction City Invitational and place a close third in the boys competition Saturday, Jan. 7.

“We swam pretty well considering we’re still pretty tired from all the yards we do over Christmas break,” coach Doug Peargin said.

The girls, now 4-1, won the four-team meet going away, with 109 points to second-place Cascade’s 69. Junction City was third with 63 and Marist fourth with 43. In the boys competition, Junction City scored 81, followed by Cascade (76) , Sweet Home (73) and Marist (54).

Individual winners for the girls were Justine Calhoon in the 200 intermediate medley and the 100 breaststroke, Jessica Trautwein in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and Sarah Rosa in the 100 backstroke. The girls also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, with Trautwein swimming the lead-off leg in both races.

Brinden Sanders was the lone winner for the boys, now 3-2, with a first-place finish in the 200 intermediate medley. Peargin noted that sophomore Jonathan Lemar turned in a notable performance, taking second in the 500 freestyle in 5:57.7. He also said that freshmen Darci Jackson (50 freestyle) and David Worthen (100 free) turned in the best swims for first-year competitors.

The Huskies will be back in their home pool at 4 p.m. Friday against Mollala and Marist.
