The Sweet Home High School girls soccer team tied La Pine 1-1 on Oct. 9.
“It was a rough one,” said Coach Ramiro Santana. “We played pretty much the first half pretty even.”
La Pine kind of drew the Huskies into its game, Santana said. “Somehow they ended up coming up with a goal in the first half.”
La Pine took a shot just over the top of the goalie’s head, he said. “So we had to come out in the second half with a little more adjustment and play our game.”
The team needed to go after the ball and get there before the opponent, he said. “In the second half, we came out and we did that. It was totally different. We had the ball. We started shooting more.”
La Pine’s goalie was good, Santana said, and she stopped some good shots.
The Huskies scored when Katie Virtue sent the ball over her opponents and dropped it in front of the goal, Santana said. Courtney Kent fought for the ball and knocked it in with about two minutes left in the game.
The game went to two 10-minute overtime periods, but neither side scored a goal, leaving the game a tie.
The team didn’t play as hard as it could have, Santana said. “When you have a young team, you don’t know what to expect. We played pretty even. It’s not bad, but not great.”
