Girls win, boys hold their own against Hidden Valley swimmers

Sweet Home’s girls finished first against three visiting teams and the boys were second behind Hidden Valley Friday as the Huskies got some further looks at the competition they are likely to see at state.

The girls scored 98 points, well ahead of Philomath (64) and Hidden Valley (47.5).

The boys were outscored 114-80 by Hidden Valley, which has 21 swimmers on its boys roster – nearly three times the Huskies’ team size.

“Hidden Valley was big,” said Coach A Jay Bronson. “This is the first time I’ve seen them (outside of state) since I’ve been here. We see them at state all the time and I wanted to bring them here for a meet.”

Although the Mustang boys outscored Sweet Home with team depth and won the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay, Hidden Valley only won one individual event while the Huskies got first-place points from the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Austyn Hogan, Andrew Toman, Grayson Savri and RJ Abbott, who finished in 3:43.03, a season’s best, and five individual wins.

Those were Abbott in the 200 Individual Medley (2:19.53) and the 100 Butterfly (58.19), Henry Jones in the 200 Freestyle (2:19.70), Austyn Hogan in the 100 Freestyle (56.51) and Andrew Tolman in the 100 Backstroke (1:02.94), which he won by 14 seconds.

The girls got wins from Peyton Markell, Ella Haggas, Khloe Sautel and Kylie Melkvik in the 200 Medley Relay (2:18.79) and Haggas, Melkvik, Lexi Rundell and Markell in the 400 Freestyle Relay  (4:27.94).

Individual winners for the girls were Khloe Sautel  in the 100 Freestyle (1:00.54) and 200 Individual Medley (2:29.12), Rundell in the 500 Freestyle (6:29.43) and 200 Freestyle (2:19.92), and Kylie Melkvik  in the 100 Butterfly (59.19).

Sweet Home was missing some top swimmers due to illness and a club swim competition, and coaches were “moving people around to try to get some different looks, try different things as we get ready for districts,” Bronson said.

Lexi Rundell had a “phenomenal” day, he said, with four best times.

Abbott, on the boys side, provided a big finish to lift the Huskies over Hidden Valley in the 400 Freestyle Relay.

“RJ was six seconds behind (going into the anchor leg) and he beat the Hidden Valley kid by one-tenth of a second,” Bronson said. “It was an amazing comeback.”

Up next for Sweet Home is a dual meet at Junction City Friday, Jan. 24, which will be the Huskies’ biggest travel meet of the season, the coach said.
