For The New Era
Sweet Home’s girls basketball team’s schedule was tweaked last week by the storms, but the Huskies still got one game in, a 28-26 win over Estacada at home. Sweet Home led much of the see-saw battle, but never by a large margin. The Huskies trailed 22-26 with just under four minutes to play in the fourth quarter, but put on some suffocating defense and Brooke Elder hit a three-pointer with 3:06 to restart their offense, then hit three free throws in the final 1:06 to ice the game for the Huskies. Coach Erika Evans could not be reached for comment and game statistics were not available. The Huskies will compete in the Astoria Tournament Dec. 28-30, then will host Sisters on Jan. 6. Aaliya Brown leads the team with 10.2 points per game and Aubrey Newberry has averaged 8 rebounds per game over the first six contests. Elder is shooting 40% from three-point territory and 42% per game from the field. Addy Vannice has contributed 3.6 assists and 4.8 steals per game. Sixty-three percent of the team’s baskets come from steals. The Molalla game, originally scheduled for Dec. 18, has been rescheduled to Feb. 17.
