Sweet Home’s girls walked away with a second-place team trophy Saturday, June 26, as two Huskies won individual titles, and two relay teams won state championships.
In the team competition, the girls finished second out of 18 teams with 243 points, 45 behind Newport, which finished with 288.
The boys were 16th out of 20 teams as Marshfield won the team competition with 227 points, ahead of Marist (217).
“What a great performance from our entire team,” said Coach Doug Peargin, who finished his 50th season with the Huskies.
Sweet Home’s individual state champions were all girls: junior Chloe Tyler in the 200 Freestyle (1:55.73) and the 100 Backstroke (57.39), and junior Malia Hewitt in the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.35). Also, both the 200 Medley Relay team of Tyler, Hewitt, Isabel Sayer and Meagan Baham took first, as did the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Jamie Seward, Sayer, Baham and Hewitt.
That Medley Relay win included a best time for that quartet of girls and got Sweet Home off to a good start, Peargin said.
Tyler’s 200 win was also a PR and Hewitt followed that up with a seven-second improvement over the time she’d swum in the district 200 IM. Tyler’s time in the 100 Backstroke was a school record, as was Hewitt’s in the 100 Breaststroke.
Runner-up finishers were Hewitt in the 200 Individual Medley, Seward in the 100 Backstroke (behind Tyler) and the 400 Freestyle Relay team – behind Newport – of Sayer, Seward, Baham and Tyler, all four recording PR’s on their relay legs.
Also medaling for the girls were Seward, with a third-place finish in the 50 Freestyle, and Sayer, who was sixth in the 500 Freestyle. Seward’s time was the 10th-fastest in school history, Peargin noted.
Plus, he said, “Isabel swam her fastest time of the year in the 500 to take sixth, then came back to swim a leg on the 200 Relay with Meagan, Jamie and Josie (Hewitt) with a PR for those four girls.”
Other qualifiers for the girls, who didn’t medal, were: sophomore Taryn Abbott, who was 14th in the 100 Backstroke and 16th in the 200 IM; Baham, who was 12th in the 50 Freestyle; freshman Rylee Markell, who was 10th in the 100 Breaststroke and 14th in the 100 Butterfly; and senior Olivia Martineau, who was 13th in the 500 Freestyle.
The Husky boys medaled in the 400 Freestyle Relay, with Chase Lopez, Hunter Calderwood, Micah Wright and Bill Hawken placing sixth.
Other qualifiers for the Huskies, who didn’t medal, were Wright (11th) and Calderwood (13th) in the 200 Freestyle, and Wright in the 500 Freestyle (ninth).
“Our boys swam pretty well, as well,” Peargin said. “They PR’d in all of the relays in their legs.”
Tyler said it was “a good feeling” to win those events, even though, she noted, the meet was “not as fast” with the absence of the 1A through 3A teams that normally participate, including last year’s champion, Catlin Gable. She said the Huskies were hoping for more, but “Newport just outnumbered us.”
Still, she said, “it was really cool to see people who would not normally get to state, get to compete, especially Megan Baham, who had the meet of her life.”
She said the atmosphere was “a lot better than we expected; there were a lot more people inside the building than we thought, a lot of cheering. It felt pretty normal.”
