Golf: Haley May qualifies for girls state championships with third place at district

Haley May qualified for the state tournament with a third-place finish in the District 2 championships at Santiam Country Club in Stayton.

As a team, with two of their four players in a varsity tournament for the first time ever, the Huskies finished fifth out of seven teams.

May shot 92-94 over two days to finish with a 36-hole score of 186.

She posted the first eagle of her golf career on the 16th hole, a par 5, dropping her second shot about 10 feet from the pin, Assistant Coach Alan May said.

“She also shot eights on the 10th and 18th holes,” he noted. “A lot of these girls have to eliminate the big blow-up holes. When they do that, they’ll be more consistent.”

Alayna Davis, also a sophomore, finished 11th, shooting 100-109.

Alan May attributed Davis’ slide on Day 2 to fatigue.

“These girls aren’t used to playing back-to-back 18 holes,” he said.

Also competing in district – playing a varsity tournament for the first time – were sophomore Liz Chelstad and freshman Nichole Grady.

May said Chelstad shot 128 for the second-day round, improving by “about 30 strokes” over her Monday score, which was only the third competitive 18-hole round of her career. Grady shot 127-128 for the two days.

Blanchet Catholic, Stayton and Taft qualified for the district’s three team berths in the state tournament.

Sophomore Maya Hatton of Taft placed first overall, shooting 82-85, while freshman Katie Goodwin of Blanchet was second (86-83). Sarah Shu of Newport also qualified as an individual, along with Haley May, with a 95-98.

Details on the Husky boys’ second day at district were not reported.

Team qualifiers for the state boys tournament were Junction City, Sutherlin and Cottage Grove. Seth Bolton of Junction City was the district champion, shooting 80-82, followed by Matt Black of Sutherlin (90-84) and Nick Russo of Cottage Grove (86-89). Qualifying for state as an individual was Stayton freshman Evan Massena (99-87).
