Golfers fifth at Bandon Invitational

After a hot start in their first two matches, the Sweet Home boys golf team cooled slightly on Thursday, April 3, at Arrow Head, losing to Sisters in a six-way match.

Taylor Huschka led the Huskies with an 83, followed by Nick Zahler (92), Markus Thedford (96) – his best career score, Jake Riggs (97) and Travis Ramos, with an uncharacteristic 98.

Huschka was third overall as Sweet Home scored 366, behind the Outlaws’ 325. Tillamook took third (368), followed by St. Helens (399), Silverton (417) and Molalla, which did not field a complete team.

“It was a beautiful day and a nice golf course, but the results weren’t quite what we expected,” Coach Tom Horn said.

The boys played Tuesday afternoon, April 8, at Salishan (Taft). They will be back in action April 14 at Agate Beach (Newport).

Tyler leads girls

at Tokatee match

Sophomore Tanna Tyler led the Huskies with a 124 Tuesday, April 8, at Tokatee in their first 18-hole match of the year.

Sisters, the top team in the state, dominated the tournament with a 370, over second-place Cottage Grove (450), Thurston (517) and Marist (520). Sweet Home, Creswell and Elmira did not field complete teams.

Emily Peabody, the Huskies’ low scorer in their opening competitive round the week before, was ill and could not play and Jillian Marvin had to sit out the back nine with a foot injury after shooting a 63 on the first nine, Horn said.

Haley Voldbaek shot 131 and Savana McCalister finished with a 135 to round out the Sweet Home scoring.

“If Jillian had shot another 63, we would have been right there,” Horn said. “Our league is pretty darn tough and Sisters is head and shoulders above everybody.

“Our girls are practicing hard and getting better.”

The girls will play at Mallard Creek on Wednesday, April 9, beginning at 1 p.m.
