Sweet Home’s golfers finished fifth in two tournaments last week and Coach Pat Davis said his inexperienced Huskies may be there for a while.
The good news, though, is that his players are getting better each time they hit the fairways. While other teams in the league have begun fielding incomplete teams and leaving their highest-scoring players home due to problems with slow play in league tournaments, the Huskies have been stepping it up.
At Diamond Woods, hosted by Junction City, on Tuesday, April 7, the Huskies were fifth but they scored 458 as a team.
“That was a little higher than our score at Santiam (the week before),” Davis said. “But Diamond Woods was a much tougher course. It was to be expected.”
Brenner Roberts led Sweet Home with a 97.
What was really encouraging was sophomore Dawson Guzman’s 107, down from 121.
“That was a great score on a tough course,” Davis said. “That was a highlight.”
The Huskies didn’t have too many others at Diamond Woods, but on Thursday, April 9, they played better at North Marion’s Langdon Farms – the first time on that course for everyone from Sweet Home, including Davis.
Sweet Home shot its best round of the year, 331.
Ty Plebuch finished with 107, down from 118, which was a big improvement, Davis said.
Devin Larsen, Tim Glassco and Guzman all shot 112, while Roberts led with a 100.
Larsen has improved from a 136 at Tokatee, the first tournament of the year, to 112 at Langdon.
“He’s getting better every match,” Davis said. “He’s a senior who’s never played before. That was a huge bump, because my bottom three have been in the 120s to 130s. To get them up in competitive range, they are now in the low middle half. We’re pretty excited about that.”
Sweet Home is in action this week Shadow Hills, hosted by Junction City, on Monday, April 13, and at Newport’ Agate Beach on Wednesday, April 15.
