Golfers finish year with fifth place in district tournament

Sweet Home finished its golf season last weekend, placing fifth in the 4A-Special District 2 tournament held at the Tokatee Golf Course in McKenzie Bridge.

The Huskies finished with a score of 789 for the two-day, 36-hole competition, held Friday and Saturday, May 5 and 6.

North Bend won the team title with total of 683 after tournament leader Marist was disqualified for rules violations.

Cascade finished second, with 690, followed by Marshfield with 741, to qualify for state.

Junction City was fourth, with 779, followed by Sweet Home, Stayton (805), North Marion (834), Newport (886) and Cottage Grove (960).

Sophomore Easten Perry led the Huskies with a 970-97-195, which put him 24th overall, followed by junior Evan Ashcraft (104-95-196), Riley Korn (102-98-200) and Chet Garrett (106-104-210) and Levi Roth (94-116-210), the latter a junior who joined the team late in the season.

North Bend’s Owen Bascom was the individual medalist, shooting 81-73-154 to take the honors. Marist’s Mick Hudson shot 77-80-157 for second, and AJ Sargent of the Spartans and Cascade’s Zach Wilson tied for third at 161 each.

“The boys didn’t play as well as I had hoped,” Coach Ron Moore said. “We ended up fifth. I definitely feel we should have finished third, if they had played like they did earlier in the year.”

Moore wouldn’t go into detail, but he said it was adults associated with Marist who caused the Spartans to be disqualified.

OSAA has rules for golf tournaments are strict: Spectators are restricted to cart paths or in the rough and must stay at least 30 yards from any competitor during play.

“At no time should a spectator be on the green, on the tee, in a fairway, in a bunker, in a hazard, nor should they stand behind a player during his/her swing,” the rules say.

Also, spectators are not allowed to communicate with players at any time during his or her round and those who violate the rules risk causing competitors to be penalized or disqualified “if any person other than the designated coach, assists the competitor by giving advice, which could influence a player in determining play, the choice of a club method of making a stroke.”

Sweet Home’s girls played their district tournament Monday and Tuesday, May 8-9. Results were not available at press time.
