The Huskies got off to a slow start in the district golf tournament May 11 at Tyrsting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, falling well behind Taft on the first day as the Tigers and tournament favorite Newport went on to qualify for the two Val-Co team slots at the state tournament.
Travis Ramoz overcame a 92 on Day One to finish fourth overall with a 171, after carding a 79 on the second day.
Newport, led by individual champion Ross Martin (76-72-148) finished the two-day tournament with a team score of 345-337-682, followed by Taft (353-357-710), Sweet Home (389-380-769) and Central (389-408-797).
Ramoz was the only player in the top nine not from Newport or Taft. The other two individual qualifiers for state were Brandon Sackett and Daniel Reynero, who finished 10th and 11th overall.
Ramoz got off to a bad start Monday, finishing the first six holes 13 strokes over par, before getting on track on the seventh and eighth holes, shooting par on those and following with a bogey on the ninth to finish 14 over at the turn. On the backstretch he settled down and parred five of the nine to finish six over after a triple-bogey on the final hole.
On the second day, he birdied the 11th hole and shot par on nine others to finish two over on the back nine and seven over for the day.
The only really consistent performance by the Huskies was freshman Paul Kim, who shot 106 on the first day and 104 on the second, never breaking 100.
Martin, the defending league champion, was four over on the first day with a 76, then shot an even-par 72 on the second.
