Golfers moving up the leader boards

Sweet Home’s golfers continued to make strides last week, dropping their team total to 388 in an 18-hole tournament at Agate Beach in Newport on Wednesday, April 15.

“They broke 400, which was our goal,” Coach Pat Davis said. “But they exceeded what we were hoping for.

The Huskies were led by Ty Plebuch’s 95, he said.

“We know we’re not contending for a district title, but we’re getting more competitive,” Davis said.

On April 13 two Huskies played in an optional match at Shadow Hills in Junction City. Both Brenner Roberts and Dustin Guzman shot 94’s, the low score for the season for Guzman.

Sweet Home’s girls have been playing a junior varsity schedule thus far.

On Monday, April 20, freshman Alayna Davis carded a 54 to place fourth overall at Santiam in Stayton. Freshman Jake Hindmarsh, in his first match after recovering from a broken wrist, finished fifth with a 55.

On Tuesday, April 14, Junior Alex Rice shot a 53 at Circle Bar at Oakridge, which qualified him to play in the Huskies’ home tournament Tuesday, April 21, at Mallard Creek, Davis said.

Freshman Haley May was the leader for the girls, carding a 54.

“She can play,” Davis said, noting that Circle Bar is a “tough course,” with “tiny greens. You can’t hit them in regulation. You’re chipping onto the green.”
