Golfers third in Val-Co tourney at Agate Beach

Sweet Home’s boys placed third in a Val-Co League tournament Tuesday, April 13, at Agate Beach, as Newport walked away with victory on its home course.

The Cubs, behind Tom Graves’ individual medalist score of 78, tallied 343 points to lead Central (359) and Sweet home (378), with Taft rounding out the field with 385.

Cody Daniels was low scorer for the Huskies, with an 87, followed by Kaleb Davis (93), Mike Fontenot (95), Blake Martin (103) and Roman Kinney (113).

“Daniels’ score was his best effort for the year, Coach Tom Horn said.

“He played very consistent golf,” Horn said, adding that the Huskies are still looking for that “break-out round that jump-starts us to play our best golf. The potential is there. We just need to tap it.

Sweet Home will get a chance to do it at home Wednesday when it hosts its own invitational together with Lebanon at Mallard Creek. First golfers tee off at noon.

On Monday, April 12, the Husky boys played the Bandon Invitational at Pacific Dunes. Horn said team scores were not available, but Jake Riggs led the Huskies with a 93 on what Horn said is “the second-rated resort golf course in America, only behind Pebble Beach.”

Eric Holmes was second for the Huskies with 100, followed by Jerome Coleman (103), Paul Kim (101) and Jason Rice (149).

“It is a hard, tough course that must be played very different from courses in the valley,” he said. “The kids did not adjust very well and their scores showed it.”

The team also got to play a practice round at Bandon Trails, “another highlight of a great weekend,” Horn said.
