Sweet Home’s track and field athletes faced bigger competition Saturday, April 6, than they have in nearly a decade, taking on a wide range of 6A- to 1A-sized schools at the Sandy Invitational.
Although the weather was wet and windy, the Huskies had a good day, Coach Nathan Whitfield said.
The boys finished sixth out of 16 teams with 54 points, behind The Dalles (74.5) and Scappoose (61) from the 4A Division, while the girls were eighth in a field of 14 with 30 points, behind Scappoose, which was second with 95 points. Both The Dalles and Scappoose, which shows signs of being a major player in the state girls competition this year, were 5A schools until last year.
Included in the competition were 6A schools Sandy and Reynolds, and 5A La Salle, Milwaukie, Wilsonville and Putnam, and a variety of smaller-division schools.
“Our throws went extremely well” in particular, Whitfield said, noting that the boys had five personal bests from nine throwers and the girls had three.
And some of those were big ones. Junior Dylan Sharp, who posted a PR of 40-0 on March 21 at Stayton and then matched that Thursday, April 4, against Newport (see below), delivered a throw of 44-8 at Sandy for a giant improvement, with freshman Gavin Tyler right behind at 42-8, a 2-foot, 7-inch PR, as they placed third and fourth.
In the girls javelin, junior Peyton Markell exceeded the 100-foot mark with a 5½-foot personal best of 105-11, and junior Abygail Foss, who had improved her javelin best by 5 feet against Newport earlier in the week, added almost 9 feet to that Saturday with a PR of 94-9.
In the discus, junior Connor Pace broke the 120-foot barrier with a PR of 120-8.
Sweet Home left some of its top track performers at home with sickness or wrestling commitments – “sickness hit us kind of hard,” Whitfield said. But the Huskies still put on some head-turning performances.
Both short relay teams did “great,” and the girls 4×400 team did well, Whitfield said.
Freshman Nick Larson and sophomore Delainie Pratt both made the finals in the short hurdles, Larson placing fourth in 18.50, after running a PR of 18.26 in the prelims, and Pratt was seventh for the girls, running 20.28 after posting a PR of 19.92 in the prelims.
In the boys 3000, freshman Kason Koenig-Walters was ninth in 10:29.48 in his first high school race at that distance and sophomore Mckenzie Miller was fourth in the 3000 (11:44.10) and fifth in the 1500 (5:25.51), posting season-bests in both events.
Also on Saturday, Sweet Home sent some of its less-experienced competitors to the Cobra Memorial Meet at Central Linn. The boys posted 12 personal bests from 19 athletes, and the girls had eight from 20 athletes.
The Huskies will be back in action Thursday, April 11, hosting Woodburn, which has moved back up to the 5A Division. Field events start at 4 p.m., with track races beginning at 4:30.
Sweet Home vs Newport
Sweet Home defeated Newport Thursday, March 4, in a dual meet at home.
The increased numbers and experience for the Huskies showed up as the boys outpointed the Cubs 86-51 and the girls outscored the visitors 72-56.
The boys had 11 individual winners and recorded 40 personal bests, while the girls had six individual winners while recording 26 PRs.
“They left some kids at home and we left some kids, but we’re getting back into form,” Whitfield said.
Stand-outs, he said, included junior sprinter Conner Stevens, one of the team’s top performers in the past couple of seasons, who “looked really good, getting back into form,” and a nearly 2-foot PR in the triple jump from senior Colin Nicholson, who won with leap of 39-6.
Other winners for the Sweet Home boys were Chase Cameron in the 100 (11.82) and 200 (25.10), Kasey Kast in the 400 (57.23), Koenig-Walters in his first high school 1500 (5:01.05), Larson in the 300 hurdles (49.04); the short relay team of Cameron, Stevens, senior Deacon Bachand and freshman Landon Murry (47.71), Sharp in the shot (40-0), Pace in the discus (113-4), junior Rickey Erickson in the javelin (120-4), Nicholson in the high jump (6-0) and sophomore Roman Shreves in the pole vault (7-6).
For the girls, winners were freshman Brooke Elder in the 100 (14.08), senior Lydia Wright in the 400 (1:10.79), Miller in the 1500 (5:32.70), Pratt in the 300 hurdles (58.13), the 4×100 relay team of juniors Amelia Sullens and Kaylynn Mamac, Elder and sophomore Loralai Mark (55.16), the 4×400 Relay team of Wright, junior Natiyah Koenig-Walters, freshman Amara Gonzales and Mamac (4:50.72), Markell in the javelin (89-9), and Koenig-Walters in the pole vault (6-6).
