Editor:
The second week of October celebrates National Nurse Midwifery Week and National Physician Assistant Week, giving those of us in health care, as well as the community at large, an opportunity to specially recognize these fine professions.
Physician assistants (PAs) provide health care services under the supervision of an attending physician. They take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret lab tests and X-rays, make diagnoses, and prescribe medications.
Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) focus on the individual needs of each woman, providing her with emotional and social support during labor and delivery and acting as her advocate during this special time. They perform hospital births and administer pain medication as needed.
For the excellent quality of care, compassion and for their continued commitment to the health of our community, please join me in applauding these providers.
