Sweet Home finished just out of the money Saturday, winning two and losing two at the Oregon Classic Wrestling Tournament held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds, Redmond.
Coach Steve Thorpe said several of his Huskies wrestled their best matches of the season, while others were lacking.
Mike Lummus, Kyle Temple and Robert Carr finished the challenging tournament undefeated. Banks won the 3A title followed by Tillamook, Burns, Rainier, Estacada and Sherwood.
“This is always a tough tournament,” Coach Thorpe said. “We got to see several of the 3A teams that we haven’t seen yet this season. I’m not disappointed with our overall performance at all.”
Coach Thorpe said the Huskies are improving each week due to a strong regular season schedule.
“Our best dual meet was against champion Banks,” Coach Thorpe said. “We were down 31-28 and John Farris was wrestling at 119 pounds. John is a freshmen and new to the varsity lineup. He wrestled his heart out but lost. He went out trying to pin the kid when he was down 7-5. He got rolled through and lost but he showed integrity, heart.”
Temple, Carr and Lummus wrestled well, especially Lummus.
“Mike beat two highly-ranked wrestlers and scored some points we needed,” Coach Thorpe said. “He’s wrestling where he left off last season.”
Calendar: The Huskies travel to Lebanon Thursday for a dual meet against the Warriors and then host Stayton, Wilsonville and West Salem on Friday. Action starts at 4 p.m.
