Grapplers down Lebanon, lose to Silverton in home mat tournament

Andrew Swanson, 125, Kyle Temple, 140, and Joe Rosa, 152, were triple winners Friday as the Huskies hosted their home mat tournament.

Sweet Home defeated Lebanon 51-15 and lost 48-13 to Silverton.

“We wrestled much better against Lebanon than we did against Silverton,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “People have to remember that we’re young and that means we’re doing a lot of teaching in these early meets.”

The Husky lineup starts off with three freshmen, Sutton at 103, Vandehei at 112 and Helfrich at 119.

“They’re new to the varsity lineup but I’m very impressed with how hard they are working both individually and as a team,” Coach Thorpe said.

Senior Andrew Swanson had another outstanding meet, beating John Diballa of Silverton 3-2. Diballa is ranked second in the state’s 4A division. He also pinned Brewer of Lebanon in 3:15.

“Andrew has been wrestling very well and has met some of the state’s top 4A wrestlers in his first two meets of the season,” Coach Thorpe said. “He’s beaten three of them already. Overall, we’re getting good leadership and work out of juniors and seniors.”

Coach Thorpe also praised quality wrestling from Kyle Temple, 140, who decision Allen of Lebanon 16-6 and Ryan Fisher of Silverton 6-1.

Tomas Rosa and freshman Shane Vandehei also received nods of approval of their coach.

Because McKay pulled out of the tournament, the Huskies wrestled a combined “gorilla” team for the third match of the evening.

The Huskies will host a strong Estacada Ranger team Thursday. Second varsity starts at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.

Friday the Huskies travel to the Canby tournament to meet Canby, Hillsboro and Sprague.
