Grapplers host N. Marion Wednesday;compete Friday/Sat. at Oregon Classic

Husky wrestlers jumped back into action after a week off for the Christmas break Thursday to down Sprague and Wilsonville on their home mats and then have a strong showing at the always-tough Dallas tournament on Saturday. The Huskies lost only to Hermiston, the 2001 4A state champions.

“We came off break in good shape,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “Typically we don’t come off break well.”

Coach Thorpe said the Huskies had a goal of defeating Sprague and then making up for a poor showing at last year’s Dallas tournament.

“Right now, we have some kids who are competing their hearts out,” Coach Thorpe said. “Our 103 pounder, Maloney, is one of them. Our heavyweight, Rob Martin, has turned it up a notch.”

Coach Thorpe said transfer student John Dearborn has fit well into the program.

“John pinned a kid from Sprague who is ranked No. 7 in the state,” Coach Thorpe said. “It’s tough coming into a new school and a wrestling program as a senior. John is learning our style of wrestling but we haven’t had to teach him how to compete.”

Veterans continue solid showings including David Helfrich, Mike Aerni and KC Stokes and Coach Thorpe said he is also pleased with recent performances by Robert Carr and Eric Lambert.

“Matt Vassar has really shown some stuff,” Coach Thorpe said. “At Dallas he beat the No. 9 ranked 4A kid in the state by eight points. Last year, that kid beat Matt by eight. Matt wants to beat the good wrestlers.”

Andrew Swanson has cut weight and is wrestling well as are several second varsity grapplers including Charles Murray and Tomas Rosa.

Calendar: The Huskies host North Marion at Sweet Home on Wednesday.

Friday the Huskies start their bid for the Oregon Classic title at 9:30 a.m. Their second round is at 1:15 p.m. If they win both rounds, the Huskies compete at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

This year’s 24 team Classic is being held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds, Redmond.
