Green Peter kokanee derby June 6

Kokanee Power of Oregon will hold its second annual kokanee derby Saturday, June 6, at Green Peter Reservoir.

Entry fee for the one-day derby is $35 for Kokanee Power members, $45 for nonmembers. Ages 15 and under are free.

First prize will be $400, with monetary paydowns to 10 places. The winner will also appear on the Outdoor Channel’s “Anglers West” show.

Kokanee Power member Ron Walker said 45 entrants participated in last year’s event, which was won by Rod Petsch of Lebanon, whose five-fish weigh-in totaled 6.3 pounds.

Weigh-ins will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the fire ring area at Sunnyside Park Day Use Area. Barbecued hamburgers will be served to participants. Side pots for blind bogey and largest Chinook will be held, as well as drawings for prizes.

Proceeds from this event will benefit educational and enhancement programs for Salmon, Kokanee, and Trout fisheries in Oregon inland waters.

Representatives from Shasta Tackle Company, Pro-Cure Scents, R&K Spinners, Rogue Rods, and Uncle Larry’s Lures will be available to answer questions and assist with the “how-to” of using their products as well as providing prizes for this event.

“Anglers West” will film a half-hour segment during the tournament and weigh-ins, Walker said. He said some of the derby sponsors were responsible for getting the Vancouver, Wash. €“ based show to cover the event.

Kokanee Power of Oregon raises funds for fishery enhancement through such means as donations, membership dues, derbies and an annual banquet. The organization’s goal is to encourage public awareness and support for kokanee, trout and salmon fisheries and to promote fishing as a family activity.
