Hands on History this Saturday

Hands on History returns to Brownsville Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Library Park, 101 Park Avenue.

It’s a fun-filled day in the park experiencing traditional pioneer and Native American skills, activities and crafts.

It’s free, fun and for the whole family.

This is the fourth year for Hands on History, which includes activities like beeswax candle dipping, cornhusk doll making and washing clothes in an old galvanized tub on a washboard, which is especially fun on a hot day.

Individuals can listen to old time fiddlers, watch a mountain man load a flintlock rifle, hear authentic Kalapuyan stories, enjoy wagon rides and pan for gold.

There will also be opportunities to learn how obsidian projectile points are flaked, hear about challenges faced by Black pioneers, try your hand at spinning wool and more.

Everyone is invited to participate in authentic activities by experiencing them first-hand, which makes learning about local history fun.

“Can I try that?” is heard all over the park.

Visiting the Linn County Historical Museum right next door to the park can enhance the history experience.

Hands on History is sponsored by the Linn County Museum Friends, a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing Linn County’s history with the public. The Linn County Historical Museum is at 101 Park Ave. in downtown Brownsville.
