Harrisburg 5, Sweet Home 3
The Huskies lost to Harrisburg 5-3 Friday at home in nine innings.
The Huskies trailed by one run after the second inning. Harrisburg expanded its lead to 3-0 at the top of the fifth, but the Huskies scored their first run in the bottom of five.
With four straight hits, from Tasha Saunders, Shelbey Gillespie, Tiffanie Cuilla and Lacey Mink, the Huskies caught up to Harrisburg in a 3-3 tie at the bottom of the seven.
“We were in a little bit of a funk,” Coach Steve Hummer said. “We didn’t play our best.”
While defense had problems and bats were slow starting out, pitchers Bayli Riggs and Saunders were impressive, he said. They combined for 18 strikeouts, two-thirds of the outs for the nine-inning game, while giving up six hits.
“But we didn’t make plays behind them,” Hummer said. The Huskies didn’t get the nine remaining outs behind the pitchers.
“We’ve got to become more mentally consistent,” Hummer said.
At bat, it was the bottom of the order that came alive in the seventh, Hummer said. The team hadn’t been getting much production out of the bottom of the lineup, but in this game, it gave the team an opportunity to win the game and kept the Huskies in the game.
“You’ve got to like how we came back,” Hummer said. “We go down fighting.”
But digging a hole and having to fight back in the last inning isn’t the best way to play the game, he said. “I love that we compete, but I’d rather be on the other side of that.”
