While students narrated, counselor Stefani Brown sang Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up.” The focus of the program this year was on post 9/11 veterans, said teacher Willa Martin. “We wanted to recognize those people that had gone out and done what they were supposed to do, above and beyond, during a time that was tragic.” They also recognized police officers and firefighters. Without them, the nation would never have returned to where it needed to be, she said. The lyrics parallel the tragedy that shocked the nation and brought it to a standstill and how soldiers and emergency workers went above and beyond the call of duty following the attack on 9/11.
