Helen Higgins

July 6, 1927 – Nov. 9, 2010

Helen C. Higgins, 83, of Turlock, Calif. died Nov. 9, 2010 while visiting family in Lebanon. She was born July 6, 1927 in Winslow, Ariz. She was raised by her mother Ora (Keith) Parker and stepfather John Echols.

She moved from Arizona to California as a youth. She met Marvin Higgins in Southern California and they were married Sept. 13, 1946. They later moved to Turlock with their daughter.

Mrs. Higgins loved quilting, sewing and knitting. She was a member of many quilting guilds. She enjoyed traveling in her motor home in addition to cruises and other travel activities. She was a member of Red Hat groups.

She was involved with many of the women’s Shriner activities. She and her husband helped organize the Aahmes Five Valley Special Ladies Club. Mrs. Higgins helped make care bears as a fund-raiser for the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital. She was a member of the Methodist church in Banning and Turlock. Her motto was “Live Well. Love Much. Laugh Often.”

Mrs. Higgins is survived by her daughter, Diana, and son-in-law Mark Pool of Lebanon; sister Ruth and brother-in-law John Richardson of Arkansas; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her best friend and companion for the last 17 years, Ron Chambers of Denair, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Higgins; sister Leora Love; and her parents.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Turlock Memorial Park in Turlock.

Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital Foundation.
