Herbert Walter Hayes, 100, of Sweet Home, Oregon passed away December 6, 2023. He was born to Robert Lincoln and Florence Bertha (Burgman) Hayes on December 5, 1923 in Austin, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Navy from July 1943 to April 1946. Herbert was a radar man on the ocean-going tugboat USS Wenatchee. Herbert’s ship guided the USS Missouri into Tokyo, Japan for the signing of the peace treaty to end WWII.

Herbert lived in Austin, Minnesota after the war and he worked at the Hormel Institute, retiring at the age of 48. Herbert moved to Sweet Home, Oregon around 1972 and passed away at his home at the age of 100. Herbert loved growing orchids and plants of many kinds, traveling the back roads to the mountains, being on his computer, and most of all, watching Judge Judy. He loved to see the ocean on regular vacations to the coast.

Herbert was preceded in death by his sisters, Anita Clarice Gibson and Joyce Marcella McDermott, both of Minnesota, and by his brother, Robert Byron Hayes of Washington. Herbert is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and by his Sweet Home family, Fred and Joyce Dodge. Herbert will be missed by many.
