With the roar of a Lion, a smoldering spark burst into flame Tuesday night and touched off what well may be a fight to the bitter “end” between two segments of Sweet Home’s business and professional men — with baseball bats as one of the prime weapons.

Though numerically inferior, the Lions club herewith issues a challenge to the mighty Rotarians to a soft-ball game, to be played Sunday, Aug. 18, the final day of this year’s Frontier Days fete. Though most of the game will be played in accordance with standard rules, there is one great difference — base runners straddle a donkey for motive power.

… Their honor is at stake.

July 28, 1982

Two members of the Sweet Home City Council have announced they do not intend to run for re-election this November, and two other council members whose terms expire this year indicated they probably will not run but have not completely made up their minds.

Definitely leaving the council at the end of this year will be Larry Barton, a 12-year veteran of the council here, and Dr. Henry Wolthuis. Barton said he’s “been on the council a long time and I’m going to give it up.”
