HolleyHawk Garden Club started in February with its largest group of participants ever – “hard-working” 30 students and five parent volunteers.
This fall, with about 20 of those students back, they’ve harvested omatoes, beans, peas, carrots, strawberries, sunflowers, crookneck squash, potatoes, green peppers, watermelon, cucumbers – and, on Sept. 16, 84 ears of corn. Teacher Joanna Reisbick, who has led the effort, said parents brought in a camp stove “and we shucked, boiled and ate corn right on the spot.” Each student also got to take some corn home as well, she said.
