Hoops team has shows potential

Editor:

I’m writing this letter in support of the high school boys basketball team. I am an alumnus from the class of 1988 at Sweet Home High School, and I watched the boys basketball team in the preseason beat then-ranked number five Valley Catholic 56-49 at home and beat the Banks Braves at home 49-44 in a very close game.

I liked how we pulled the game out in the last 1:03 of the fourth quarter when the game was tied 44-44. We hit some clutch free throws to win the game. Also, we may have lost to the Lebanon Warriors by nine points at home in a game where I saw the last five minutes; but Lebanon is in a very tough league, the Midwestern League.

They play teams, such as the Churchill Lancers, the Sheldon Irish, the Thurston Colts and the Marshfield Pirates, so I think we played well considering the league that Lebanon plays in.

In addition, I saw the second half of the game against the Marist Spartans at home, and we lost by 12 points. But I believe that Marist is ranked in the top 10 in state 3A boys basketball. Furthermore, they play in the Sky-Em League, which is a tough league too; and they play the Siuslaw Vikings, the Pleasant Hill Billies, the Junction City Tigers and the Cottage Grove Lions, which used to be in the 4A Midwestern League.

I hope that the boys basketball team is successful and that we at least place high enough in league to make the playoffs and qualify for state.

But we do play tough teams in league, such as the Cascade Cougars, the Sisters Outlaws and the Stayton Eagles, so we do have our work cut out for us.
