Horn narrowly misses state golf spot

Husky senior Keith Horn missed making the state golf tournament by just two strokes finishing sixth at the district golf tournament May 12-13 at the Elkhorn Golf Club.

Horn shot an 81-85-166 to lead the Huskies to a fourth place team finish.

As expected, the Sisters Outlaws easily won the tournament, shooting a team 301-301 for a 602. Molalla took second with a 339-356-695.

Stayton was third with a 352-356-708. Sweet Home was fourth with 354-363-717. North Marion was fifth with 383-375-768 and Cascade was sixth with a 412-400-812.

Coach Tom Horn said he the finish was disappointing considering the team’s potential.

“Going into the district tournament, I thought we had a very good chance of qualifying as a team for the state meet,” Coach Horn said. “A bad back nine on the first day put us in poor position for Day 2. Molalla capitalized and distanced themselves from us and Stayton.”

The Huskies caught fire on the front nine on the second day and trimmed Molalla’s lead down to four shots going into the back nine.

“Unfortunately, the back nine was not as kind to us and we lost any momentum we had gained and finished the round poorly,” Coach Horn said. “Against, we just couldn’t put three good rounds together for our team score. Everyone had at least one very good nine in the tournament but had trouble putting 18’s together.”

Coach Horn said that although his Huskies finished on a disappointing note, he believed the season was a “great success.”

“We had three players break 80 at one time in the season, which resulted in team lows that resulted in two tournament wins,” Coach Horn said. “We had the lowest team scoring average since the early 90’s. Keith Horn had the fifth lowest scoring average in the history of Sweet Home golf.”

Coach Horn said Scott Gagner was a solid No. 2 player all year and finished in the top 10 scoring averages for Sweet Home. He finished 14th at district.

“We hope to build on this season and continue to get better,” Coach Horn said.

Following Horn’s 166 were: Scott Gagner, 84-89-173; Kenny Jones, 90-96-186; Sam Waller, 99-93-192; Ricky Howe, 100-96-196.

Top 5 district placers: Christian Green, 143, Sisters; Scott Barton, 150, Sisters; Jon Green, 152, Sisters; Alex Enriquez, 155, Stayton; David Green, 161, Sisters.
