Host families needed for next year

Cynde Burford says that plans are under way for next year’s crop of exchange students and, as usual, host families will be needed.

“We have two girls who want to come (from Josai),” she said. “Both have been to Sweet Home during the summer and have been to Sweet Home High School. They are a known quantity – good girls and they’ll fit in well. They’re wanting to try lots of new things.”

Burford, a longtime Spanish teacher at Sweet Home High School before she recently retired, said that students become part of the hosts’ families. She and her husband hosted one of this year’s students for the first semester.

“It’s really cool. They are part of your family. She had Thanksgiving and Christmas with us.

“Then, you have the whole thing of getting them into school, opening a bank account, that kind of stuff. You see them blossom, you see their English improve. It’s kind of cool.”

She said current exchange student Shiho Harada, who stayed with them, went to a family who lives on a farm for the second semester.

“Now she gets the farm experience,” Burford said. “They have four new calves, so she gets to feed the calves. She didn’t skip a beat.

“I wish we could find two families for each student.”
