Coming off a big win at home over Philomath, Sweet Home’s volleyball team couldn’t find the rhythm last week against Corbett, losing 25-16, 25-18 and 25-17 in front of their home crowd.
“They were a strong team, really consistent,” Coach Alicia Meiers said of the Cardinals. “They were not making a lot errors. We were making them for them.”
The Huskies had trouble in nearly all aspects of the game – hitting errors, service errors, problems with service return, she said.
“We did some good things but it was unfortunate that we did not have more good things in a row,” she said.
Freshman Kayley Lopez had two service aces for Sweet Home and Molly Fisher led the team with five kills. Freshman Ally Tow added four. Meier said Fisher and Sierra Thayer provided some solid defense in the backcourt as well.
She attributed the Huskies’ problems to inexperience.
“When things go down, nobody’s ready to step up and be that catalyst,” she said. “It seems like when one person’s down, it drags the team down rather than the other way around.”
The Huskies begin league play this week at Sisters (8-1), which beat Corbett in a tournament match-up earlier this season. Sweet Home will play at Junction City (6-2) Thursday.
They will travel to the Sisters Tournament on Saturday before returning home Tuesday, Sept. 23, to host Cottage Grove.
