Huskies 4th at Newberg, host home meet Friday

Senior Andrew Swanson won all three of his matches Friday as the Husky wrestlers took fourth at the Newberg tournament.

Eagle Point took the championship, Newberg was second and Century was third. Following the Huskies were Crook County, Pendleton, West Linn and Oregon City.

“This was our first time at this tournament in several years,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “Newberg is ranked second, Century is third and West Linn ninth in the 4A division. We knew it was going to be tough but I’d much rather take fourth in a tournament of this caliber than win a lesser tournament.”

Coach Thorpe said he received solid performances from all of his wrestlers, from novice through varsity.

“Kyle Temple at 140, Robert Carr at 145 and Rob Martin at 215 all looked good,” Coach Thorpe said.

The Huskies took a young team to the meet.

“We had three freshmen in the varsity lineup,” Coach Thorpe said. “John Sutton was at 103, Shane Vandehei was at 112 and Tom Helfrich was at 119. They did a very good job. Shane met the number two ranked kid from Newberg and wrestled his guts out. This was a baptism by fire.”

Coach Thorpe said Newberg coach Neal Russo was impressed with the Huskies.

“Our sights are set on district and state,” Coach Thorpe said.

Sweet Home hosts their home tournament Friday at 4 p.m. against Lebanon and Silverton.

The Sweet Home Mat Club tournament will be held Saturday at 10 a.m.
