Junction City 6, Sweet Home 1

Game one of doubleheader

Junction City defeated the Husky baseball team 6-1 and 11-4 on the road on April 22.

In the first game, “we couldn’t manage many hits in this one,” Coach Dan Tow said. “Their kid had us popping uip and grounding out a lot. We played fairly well defensively, but we struggled to generate much offense.”

Robby Wallace was losing pitcher. Greg Sipe pitched in releief. Deutschman collected the win.

At bat, Adam Hummer, Joe Ellis and Trevor Tagle were all 1-3. Tagle had the Huskies’ one RBI.

Game two of doubleheader

“We hit the ball much better in this game, but we didn’t do a very good job hitting with runners in scoring position,” Tow said. “We should have scored a lot more runs for as many hits and base runners as we had.

“We’ve really been working on hitting, and it showed in this game. We have to rise to the occasion when we have opportunities to drive in runs, and we just didn’t do that very well.

“We weren’t very effective defensively in this game either. Our pitching wasn’t particularly sharp, and when we give up that many runs, we’re usually going to be in trouble.”

Brett Miller was losing pitcher. Kyle Pettit and Greg Sipe pitched in relief. Knox was winning pitcher.

Adam Matuszak went 3-4 with a double. Adam Hummer went 3-4. Joe Ellis went 2-4 with a solo homerun. Kyle Pettit went 2-4.

Sweet Home 2, Molalla 0

The Huskies defeated Molalla 2-0 behind solid pitching by Adam Hummer and team defense at home on April 20.

“This was really a pitchers duel,” Tow said. “We didn’t generate a lot of offense, but it was enough to win because Adam was just really sharp tonight on the mound.

“Our kids continue to do a good job coming out with intensity on defense and good hustle. It’s starting to pay dividents.

“We just played solid defense the whole night. We had a couple miscues, but neither hurt us. Adam Hummer just had a great night on the mound.”

Hummer was winning pitcher, and he pitched the whole game. Nick Chance was losing pitcher.

At bat, Pettit went 1-2. Matuszak and Hummer each went 1-3. Skyler Bascom had one RBI. Tagle scored both Husky runs.

Cascade 3, Sweet Home 2

Cascade barely slipped past a tough Husky defense to beat the Huskies 3-2 on the road on April 18.

“This game was a good defensive game,” Tow said. “Particularly our infielders did a great job. We had two double plays in the game. Both pitchers (Van Hess and Pettit) were tough, and our defense did a very good job.

“We didn’t hit the ball well, but I thought we battled hard all the way. They won the game with a two-oout base hit in the bottom of the seventh.

“It was a tough loss, but I was proud of our kids. They competed hard.”

Pettit was losing pitcher. He pitched in relief for starter Robby Wallace. Van Hess was winning pitcher.

Pettit went 1-3 at bat. Bascom went 1-2 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
